I’ve developed in Python, Perl, Java, and C. Most of the work I did, when I was a software engineer, was in the area of computational linguistics or in operations research. So, I did fast, quick, and resource intensive work crunching numbers, and modeling. It’s been several years since I’ve developed anything, but I recently got the itch to create software again. I’m excited about this. So, I decided to try Ruby.
What have I done so far? Well, not much. I have a windows machine, which is too bad. But, I can make it less crappy by having TweakUI, Cygwin, and Emacs loaded also. With those tools, I at least feel less lame. Luckily for me, there’s a Ruby Windows Installer. That’s as far as I’ve gotten so far. Tonight, I want to configure and start learning Ruby.
I have a few ideas that I want to try Ruby on. Most of my ideas are on implementations on the Social Web and also on user-generated content (blogs). I think there is possibly a really cool application I could build based on the some concepts of computational linguistics that I studied in graduate school. I’m excited to see where this takes me.
Also, if you are a reader of Shmula, you might have noticed that I am now capitalizing — yes, I’ve given in to the man — actually, I’ve given in to the audience: you all want me to capitalize because my posts have been difficult to read. The customer is always right, so I gave up my stubborn position on non-capitalized posts. Thanks for your input everybody.
