The Applie iPhone, in my view, is such a big step toward more friendly computing. The interface is refreshing, the device is beautiful, and the interaction is, for the most part, intuitive. Indeed, in a world of quick-to-be discarded phones and devices, I’m on the verge of buying one, but not yet.
But, First Some Pictures. . .
Last week, I made a quick visit to the Apple store in Walnut Creek, California on the unveiling of the iPhone. Things weren’t as crazy as I thought they would be. Below are some pictures from that visit:

Why Not Yet?
I suppose I’m not an early-adopter. I have to admit that on my visit, my swipe-happy hand was ready to pull out the plastic to buy an iPhone, but I restrained myself. I rationalized that the 1st generation of anything will have issues that will be fixed in later versions. The sucky-but-smart-and-expected thing about companies is that they use the community to help the firm identify all the crap in their products — that is, the community of early-adopters of the iPhone will expose all the issues with the iPhone, that Apple will then track, rank, prioritize, and schedule in the iPhone product roadmap of version releases. This is typical and happened with the iPod, as well as with almost all software and hardware. This was really my main argument against buying an iPhone — I found myself supporting the argument that many bandwagon-adopters or late-adopters make. I suppose I’m in that camp now.
Next Steps
Using empirical data of the iPod version releases, I’ll be creating an ajax timeline of the iPod, similar to the acquisition timeline I built a few months back of Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo’s acquisitions. Perhaps that is a good analogue of what we can expect of the iPhone. I’ll be doing that and building that over the next few days. In the meantime, you can view my supply chain analysis of the iPhone, based on pure speculation at the time, but can now be reverse-engineered after dissecting the iPhone parts and their manufacturers.

Hey Peter, I have a friend who just got one and I really, really like the interface. Work supplies me with a phone so I am not really in the market but if I were then this would be the one.
I agree about holding off until the next generation is out though. I think that 8gig is pretty meager and would want more. Especially if it were to be a replacement for my iPod (which is what I would expect).
Some features like the “youtube” button were just lame and I could do without that. Heck, why not just have a “myspace” button? I did like the maps feature and the speed sensitive control for the iPod portion.

Love the pics. Wish I could have gone to check it out myself that night.
