i joined the product group after my mba from wharton. their base salary was low, but i got two cash bonuses paid out my 1st and 2nd years i was there as part of my package, then i left after that. the restricted stock units (rsu) were not as good as the options they used to give out, so i didn’t walk away from much.
the work at amazon is great. everyone there is really smart and we all had tools and all kinds of resources at our disposal. work was really great there and motivating.
i left because i burnt out and my bonuses were paid out. the reason people stay is because they enjoy the work. the rsu’s are not “golden handcuffs” by any means. but, the work is so inspiring, motivating, and the things i learned at amazon were more than i could have ever learned in my mba or in any other company. i got burnt out because work at amazon requires pretty long hours and it’s demanding. i don’t mind that, but i’d like to be reasonably compensated for hard work. working long and hard for not much in monetary return can only last so long, which is why turnover is high, but most people leave for much higher paying jobs and much higher titles because the amazon experience is so good.
i still keep in touch with the friends i’ve made there. i’ll always have good memories and i’ll always be a loyal customer of amazon.
