in october 2005, aol bought weblogs for a rumored $25 – $40 million. this deal made many wonder the following: how does one valuate a blog?
tristan louis does a nice analysis of that deal and attempts to rationalize the cost per inbound link into the weblogs empire. he uses the technorati ratings and data. based on technorati inbound link data, percentage of overall network linkage each blog represents, he concludes that for the aol-weblogs deal, each inbound link carries a price between $500.00 – $900.00 usd.
dane takes tristan’s analysis further and he built an applet out of it. based on the results of that applet, my blog, which is 59 days old, is worth roughly ~$25,000 — which, oddly enough, is 1/4 of my student loan debt. now, i just need to find a buyer for shmula.
of course, this is just an estimate, based on inbound links. there are other factors to consider also, such as the quality of those links, subscribership, the community underpinning the blog, and traffic — daily or monthly uniques, returns, and page views.
